About Alpine Loop National Backcountry Byway

Alpine Loop National Backcountry Byway

The Alpine Loop National Backcountry Byway is a 63-mile off-road route located in the San Juan National Forest, connecting the historic towns of Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City in southwestern Colorado. The route traverses multiple high mountain passes, including Engineer Pass (12,800 feet) and Cinnamon Pass (12,640 feet), and offers dramatic views of jagged peaks, deep valleys, and wildflower meadows during summer months. The byway covers a rugged landscape shaped by extensive mining history, with numerous old mining structures and ghost towns that provide a glimpse into the 19th-century silver and gold rush era. Visitors to the Alpine Loop experience a high-altitude ecosystem characterized by subalpine and alpine environments, featuring stands of aspen, spruce, fir, and alpine tundra. Wildlife such as mule deer, black bears, marmots, and various bird species are commonly observed along the route. The byway draws off-road enthusiasts, hikers, photographers, and history buffs who seek to explore the remote backcountry and its scenic wonders. Popular activities include 4x4 driving, mountain biking on adjacent trails, backcountry camping, fishing in high mountain streams, and hiking to alpine lakes. The route is generally open from late June to early October, depending on snowpack and weather conditions. Challenges along the byway include steep rocky terrain, high elevation, and sudden weather changes, requiring visitors to be well-prepared and cautious. The combination of historic sites, natural beauty, and adventurous travel opportunities make the Alpine Loop a distinctive experience in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains.
